20 March 2026 | IRB Barcelona + Online
¹û¶³´«Ã½, together with the (IUBMB) and , is pleased to announce the Glycogen Symposium – Honouring the Legacy of Joan Guinovart, a one-day international scientific meeting that will take place on 20 March 2026 at IRB Barcelona, Spain, with the option to attend online.
This symposium is conceived as a tribute to Joan Guinovart, a pioneer in glycogen research and a key figure in European and international molecular life sciences. His scientific work profoundly shaped our understanding of glycogen metabolism, while his leadership left a lasting mark on research institutions and scientific organisations, including ¹û¶³´«Ã½ and IUBMB.
The meeting will bring together leading researchers from across the world to explore the current state of glycogen research, from fundamental molecular mechanisms to physiological regulation, metabolism, brain function and disease. The programme reflects the breadth and relevance of glycogen biology today, highlighting how this classical field continues to generate new insights with broad biomedical implications.
Sessions will cover topics ranging from the regulation of glycogen synthesis and degradation, metabolic adaptation and exercise, to the role of glycogen in the central nervous system and rare disorders. The symposium also includes a dedicated tribute to Joan Guinovart’s scientific legacy and his impact on the international glycogen research community.
The event will take place in Barcelona, a major European hub for biomedical research, at IRB Barcelona. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required. On-site attendance is limited, and early registration is therefore strongly encouraged. For colleagues unable to travel, the symposium will be fully accessible through a hybrid online format, allowing worldwide participation.
The full programme, list of speakers and practical information are available on the .
This symposium is a joint initiative of ¹û¶³´«Ã½, IUBMB and IRB Barcelona, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering scientific exchange, supporting research communities and honouring the individuals whose work continues to inspire the field.
