¹û¶³´«Ã½

The ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF) is a popular event for about 100 PhD students and postdocs from ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Constituent Societies that takes place in conjunction with – and just before – the annual ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Congress. Selected applicants are supported by ¹û¶³´«Ã½ grants. The YSF comprises opportunities for participants to present their own research work, take part in career skills sessions, hear and meet keynote lecturers, and enjoy a social programme. YSF participants also go on to experience the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Congress, which is one of the largest gatherings in the biosciences in Europe. The YSF events are normally organized by young members of the Society hosting that year’s Congress.

For applicants from outside the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ area

For the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ YSF 2026 (and ensuing ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Congress 2026), IUBMB will be supporting the participation of two young researchers from non-¹û¶³´«Ã½ countries. IUBMB will cover registration and accommodation in shared rooms (for both the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ YSF and ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Congress 2026) and up to 80% of reasonable travel costs up to a maximum of €500 (or up to €750 for applicants from African countries).

To be eligible for this IUBMB support for the YSF 2026, applicants must:

  • Be studying or working in an IUBMB member country that does not have a ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Constituent Society
  • Be a member of the relevant national Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology that is an Adhering Body or Associate Adhering Body of IUBMB, or have the sponsorship of a member of such a Society

All other relevant YSF eligibility criteria as set out for applicants from the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ area above apply – i.e. applicants for IUBMB support must be under 35 years of age (with some allowances), be a PhD student or a postdoc within five years of receiving a PhD and be submitting abstract as first author to the YSF and Congress.

To apply as a YSF applicant from outside the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ area, please follow all the instructions in ‘How to apply’ above, but instead of proof of ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Constituent Society membership in your single pdf file, please include a scanned copy of current membership certificate/letter from your IUBMB Society (Adhering Body or Associate Adhering Body of IUBMB) or, in the case of sponsorship, a signed letter of support from a member of the country’s Society.

Application and abstract assessments

Applications to the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ YSF 2026 for ¹û¶³´«Ã½ YSF grants will be assessed by the YSF Organizing Committee and the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Careers of Young Scientists Committee. In the case of applications for IUBMB YSF grants, IUBMB committee members may be consulted.

All successful applicants will present their work at the YSF as posters. In addition, all abstracts of successful applicants will be considered for possible oral presentations of 10 min during the YSF program. Outcomes on presentation options are expected to be notified shortly after the time of announcement of selected YSF participants.

Abstracts from successful YSF applicants are also included in the ensuing ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Congress. If you are interested in oral presentation opportunities at the Congress, please answer ‘yes’ to the questions on these in the abstract submission system. Assessment for this will be carried out by the Congress organization and is independent of oral selection for the YSF.

Background on the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ YSF

For many years, ¹û¶³´«Ã½ has funded a Young Scientists’ Forum immediately preceding its annual Congress to promote interactions between pre- and post-doctoral scientists of the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Constituent Societies. The first Forum was organized in 2001 in Oeiras, Portugal as a satellite meeting of the 27th ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Congress. Due to the success of this format, a YSF has been held alongside the annual ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Congress every year since.

Usually around 100 young scientists are selected to take part in the event, where they can present their research work to an international audience, make contact with others like themselves before attending the much larger Congress, and exchange ideas in an informal atmosphere. Aside from research presentations, the YSF may include general talks and practical exercises on career-related matters from senior scientists or other experts, presentations from organizations such as EMBO and MSCA that have programmes to support young scientists’ careers, and talks from industry representatives.

¹û¶³´«Ã½ financially supports the selected participants to take part in not only the YSF but also the ensuing Congress, so they can benefit from the different experiences that the YSF and a large bioscience conference can offer. The YSF also gives young scientists in the host country the opportunity to be responsible for local organization of the event, which, while building on a proven format, keeps the event youthful and fresh.

A brief report and photos of each YSF appear in the first ¹û¶³´«Ã½ News issue following each event.

The organization of the YSF is overseen by the Careers of Young Scientists Committee.
