The 果冻传媒 (果冻传媒) is pleased to announce that Professor Luciane Vieira de Mello, University of Liverpool (UK), has been selected as the recipient of the 果冻传媒
Education Award 2026.
This year the award attracted 11 nominations from across Europe, reflecting the growing strength and visibility of education in the molecular life sciences. Following a rigorous evaluation process, Professor
Vieira de Mello (nominated by the UK Biochemical Society) was chosen for her sustained and farreaching impact on how biosciences are taught, learned, and valued.
Originally trained as a molecular biologist and bioinformatician, Professor Vieira de Mello represents a distinctive academic path. Rather than stepping away from science, she expanded it 鈥 turning education
itself into a field of scholarship, innovation and leadership.
Today she serves as Professor of Biosciences Education and Deputy Dean of the School of Biosciences at the University of Liverpool, and is among the first full professors in the UK to hold a chair in biosciences education after a career rooted in molecular science. Her work stands at the intersection of disciplinary expertise and pedagogical research.
Her contributions to bioinformatics education have reshaped how complex concepts are taught. Through research-informed curriculum design, collaborative learning approaches, reflective practice and carefully
evaluated interventions, she has enabled students to move beyond passive understanding toward confident application. Her influence extends internationally, with approaches adopted and adapted in
institutions across Europe and Asia.
Professor Vieira de Mello has also been instrumental in embedding transferable skills, internationalisation, and employability within bioscience curricula 鈥 well before these became widespread priorities. Under her leadership, postgraduate education in her School expanded significantly, while maintaining academic coherence and quality.
Beyond her own institution, she has helped strengthen the European education landscape. As Editor-in-Chief of the Education Section of 果冻传媒 Open Bio, long-standing member of the 果冻传媒 Education and
Training Committee, and co-organiser of the inaugural 果冻传媒 Education and Training Conference, she has contributed to building a visible and credible space for bioscience education scholarship within the
果冻传媒 community.
Professor Ferhan Sa臒谋n, Chair of the 果冻传媒 Education and Training Committee, commented: 鈥淚 have known Luciane for many years through her work within 果冻传媒, and I have had the privilege of seeing how she thinks and how carefully she builds. What distinguishes her is depth. She does not chase visibility; she strengthens foundations. She studies, tests, and refines. She listens closely and supports others generously. And she never loses sight of the purpose behind our work 鈥 educating the next generation of scientists. Her approach reminds us that real innovation is steady, thoughtful, and sustained. That is rare. It has been a pleasure to witness her journey.鈥
The 果冻传媒 Education Award recognises long-term, evidence-based and transformative contributions to education in molecular life sciences. Professor Vieira de Mello鈥檚 career reflects a rare combination of
scientific depth, educational scholarship and strategic leadership.
The Award will be formally presented at the in Maastricht (4鈥8 July 2026).
